Boonthamurra Native Title Claim

The Boonthamurra Native Title Claim is roughly an area centred around Windorah and Eromanga.

The Boonthamurra People are the biological descendants of the apical ancestors:

Dick of Ray Station married Rosie Braddle of Terarchie Station at Eromanga in 1920.
Rosie was born around 1896 at Ray Station and parents were Braddle and Sally.
Dick was born around 1878 Mt Margaret Stn, Eromanga and parents were Jacob and Rosie

Budjiti Native Title Claim

The claim area is roughly the area bounded by Yowah, Thargomindah, Hungerford, Eulo and Cunnamulla.

The Budjiti people are described as the biological descendants of the following apical ancestors

Jessie Brooks
Gypsy Brooks
Lizzie Brooks

It is interesting that there are only three apical ancestors listed for this large area.

Deebing Creek Index

An index to Correspondence relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people 1894-1915 – Deebing Creek is available at the Queensland State Archives web site.

It is described as follows

"This index was created from Series ID 4354, Miscellaneous Items and Correspondence, specifically Item ID 716219, Papers, 1894-1905 and Item ID 716261, Papers, 1906-1915 which relate to Deebing Creek and Purga Missions. Only the Deebing Creek files have been indexed. The index was created by staff from the Communities and Personal Histories Unit, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Services, Department of Communities."

Aboriginal War Census returns 1915-1916

The index to the Aboriginal War Census returns 1915-1916 is now available at the Queensland State Archives web site. This series is described as follows


"A census of the Australian population was conducted during the First World War. The Chief Protector of Aboriginals wrote to each district officer under his control requesting a census of the Aboriginal population in accordance with the national census requirements. Lists of Aboriginal people living at various settlements to be used for war census purposes resulted. Many district officers not only listed all men aged from 18 to 45 years for war purposes, but also included all women and children and residents of other ethnic backgrounds such as South Sea Islanders and Rotumans.
